happy birthday me!

I've been pretty busy this past few days. My sister asked me to make a chart for her little boy - something she could stick pictures of his nursery etc on and stars for a reward scheme (motherly nectar points!) for when he didn't cry his eyes out. It's not fantastic, I haven't actually used paint in close to 10 years! It did inspire me to buy some paint, brushes and paper to get back in to it a little.

A little confession... I bought more yarn. Bad, bad! I have so much in my stash now it's ridiculous. I spied these colours in rico baby dk and decided to make a completely different blanket for my friends December arrival, one made of mini hexagons from Bunny Mummy's tutorial.

It's absolutely freezing these days. Really. Autumn has definitely started in this house, and the aran cardigans have been cracked out. I'm whipping up a quick shawl/scarf in a mohair dk to keep the chill off my neck as it's not quite full on scarf weather yet. We have no oil at the moment as when it runs out in Spring we don't bother buying any, and we're going off on honeymoon in 3 weeks so saving our money for then. Maybe I'll have to hook up some hand warmers to wear whilst working too!

the colour is a tiny bit off, but here is the start of my not-a-scarf shawl

Annnnnd yesterday was my birthday! It was quite fun, a fancy dress party on Friday night (I was beetlegeuse), breakfast in bed yesterday, almost being arrested in M&S, afternoon siestas, flowers and films. I was spoiled by my friends, with loads of Liz Earle goodies, L'Occitane, jewellery... fun!

happy birthday burnsie!

shortbready biscuits of deliciousness
Today was my granny's 90th birthday. 90! I made her some tasty little biscuits, sort of like shortbread but not quite. No presents this year, at her age there's not much that she hasn't got and with a veritable army of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her own kids tasty treats are always a winner. Luckily I didn't buy any flowers as she had so many they were being given away due to lack of vases (and room!). She hasn't been very well these past few months so it was great to see her looking really well and being on such top form - go Burnsie!

mini hexagons thanks to bunny mummy

Last night I came across the mini hexagon tutorial over on bunny mummy. Alas, a new addiction! They're so quick and easy to make, I have around 20 that I made whilst watching a film last night (I love multi-tasking, don't you?). I have no idea what I'll make with them, I think I might just keep at it and when I have a big box full make decide? I could make a wrap for my mum... who knows! The hexagon that looks lilac in that photo is actually a taupe colour, the light in my house is a bit iffy these days.

charring some aubergines for tasty aubergine dinner
I made what in our house is imaginatively referred to as 'aubergine dinner' last night (we have many names like this such as 'bed juice' = juice that you bring up to bed) which is fairly labour intensive but well worth it. I love the smell of charred aubergine, sort of sweet. For anyone who's interested, I think this dish is actually called aubergine parmigiana in its original state. I've never followed a recipe though, I think I saw it once and then made up a version for myself. Meals are always that much more interesting when there's a bit of pot luck involved, don't you think?!

she's making things again...

I don't seem to be able to stick to just the one, instead hopping from WIP to WIP as the mood strikes me. Here are a few I have on the go at the minute

1. Moody blues - a huge ripple all for me! It's king-sized, and taking quite a while

2. Autumn - one for my cousin, in autumn colours as requested

3. Ou est the baby - baby blanket for an impending delivery (not me!)

blankety collage

There are more but I'll stick with the blankets for now, shall I? The first two are made using a mixture of acrylics, Stylecraft and Hayfield I think. For the baby blanket I'm using Rico baby cotton as far as I recall, must double check that one.

Just a small post, to ease myself in to this creative blogging that I've watched from afar for so long :)
